Laneway Housing in Vancouver a Success

There have been over 100 new laneway houses built in Vancouver since the July 2009 bylaw amendment. One of the city’s  EcoDensity charter initiatives, construction of additional rental housing is now allowed in RS-1 and R-5 zones. To qualify, landowners must have a lot that is at least 33 feet wide that either borders a laneway and double fronts onto a street or is on a corner that has a lane dedication. The unit may be occupied for rental or family use only (ie not stratified or sold separately) and is limited in size depending on the dimensions of the lot. The maximum allowable unit size is 750 square feet. More on the regulations of laneway housing may be found on the City of Vancouver’s laneway housing information  page.
